Human nature intrigues me. It also annoys me because I tend to notice things other people don’t. Sometimes it’s a good thing, other times not.

I’ve been told I’m overly critical of people, but I’m really not.

I’m just observant

Referring to this week’s pet peeve, it involves shopping.

As I push my shopping cart through a store, there is always at least one person who eyeballs my cart. What I mean is they stare at the contents of my cart as if I have something better than they do. When I say stare, I mean they thoroughly exam everything I have in my cart, before looking at me with a blank expression and a subtle thought like “who would buy that?”

Granted, if I’m buying duct tape, lube, a bundle of cucumbers and ice cream it may invoke a little curiosity, but that’s between the cashier and I, not other shoppers.

Whether I’m passing these cart gawkers in an aisle, or waiting at the check out line, I can’t help but wonder what they are thinking. Am I such a cool shopper they need to see what I’m buying so they can get the same? Are they judging me because I’m a grown man who eats Froot Loops? Do they pity me because of my food choices?

If they wanted that last chocolate mayonnaise flavored Hot Pockets package from the freezer that I picked up, I could totally understand the animosity. But to just gaze upon my selections out of pure curiosity is just weird.

Is this a stupid pet peeve? Maybe. But now that I mentioned it you’re going to start noticing it too, unless you’re a cart gawker yourself.

I don’t know why this annoys me, but it does.

Have fun shopping from now on.

Marty
